Fresh Food Basket Program
Many of us struggle with the rising cost of living, which includes the increasing cost of nutritious food. Since its inception, the Fresh Food Basket program has expanded and is available to all residents, regardless of income, in every township in the District of Muskoka. The program is facilitated by the District of Muskoka, but is run by a dedicated group of volunteers in each community. In 2013, an average of over 250 Fresh Food Baskets were sold each month, and with growing community support, the program continues to expand.
The Fresh Food Basket program enables communities to:
Buy in bulk and purchase fresh fruit and vegetables at a discount price
Increase community capacity through partnerships
Provide an opportunity for people to try new foods and to share recipes
Provide training opportunities and information sharing around nutrition and the environmental impact of composting and recycling
Residents in Ryde can purchase a regular basket for $20.00. Residents in Port Carling, Georgian Bay, Huntsville, Dwight, Bracebridge, Gravenhurst and Baysville can purchase a regular basket for $20.00 or a family size basket for $25.00.
